Orangutan O/96
John DeVore built the O/96 around one idea: a speaker that a small tube amplifier can actually drive. At 96 dB and a steady 10 ohms, it asks almost nothing of the amplifier, which opens the door to the low-power single-ended designs we like most.
The 10-inch paper cone runs a phase plug and a motor adapted from DeVore’s Silverback Reference drivers; the 1-inch silk dome above it is gently horn-loaded. Response runs from 26 Hz to 22 kHz. Cabinets come in Lace Walnut as standard, with custom finishes to order.
That combination has been picked apart by people who listen for a living. Art Dudley called it “colorful yet uncolored” in Stereophile. Paul Miller in HiFi News came back to its transparency, Rafe Arnott at Part-Time Audiophile to the weight of its bass, and Jack Roberts in Dagogo to how coherent it stays for a two-way.
Our own reason for stocking it is simpler. Put a few watts of Audio Note or Thöress in front of it and you hear what those amplifiers do when they aren’t working hard: colour in the midrange, voices with body, music that starts and stops when it wants to.
Come and hear it on a low-powered amp. That combination is the whole point.
